Fiorentina beat Atalanta in blow to slim title hopes

Moise Kean’s superb first-half solo effort secured Fiorentina a 1-0 home victory over title-chasing Atalanta in Serie A on Sunday, dealing a further setback to the visitors’ Scudetto ambitions.

The Italy striker broke the deadlock just before halftime with a surging run and a precise low shot that slipped past goalkeeper Marco Carnesecchi and nestled into the bottom corner.

Atalanta, whose hopes of securing their first-ever Serie A title continue to dwindle, failed to register a single shot on target throughout the match.

They remain third with 58 points, six behind leaders Inter Milan, who beat them 2-0 before the international break and play later on Sunday, alongside second-placed Napoli.

Fiorentina, now eighth with 51 points, started cautiously, with Kean firing an early opportunity wide, while Atalanta’s Ademola Lookman saw a promising effort blocked by the home defense.

Despite struggling for clear-cut chances, Atalanta’s top scorer Mateo Retegui started despite a recent thigh strain but misfired from the edge of the box.

Just when the match seemed destined for a goalless first half, Kean made up for his earlier miss by pouncing on a loose ball near the halfway line, sprinting past Isak Hien, and clinically finishing past Carnesecchi.

Atalanta’s Unbeaten Away Streak Ends

Fiorentina pushed to double their lead after the break, with Nicolo Fagioli testing Carnesecchi with a looping shot from distance. Atalanta saw more of the ball in the second half but struggled to create meaningful opportunities.

Assistant manager Tullio Gritti, filling in for the suspended Gian Piero Gasperini, attempted to inject fresh energy into the attack with a double substitution, bringing on Daniel Maldini and Lazar Samardzic in the 55th minute, followed by Marco Brescianini replacing Charles De Ketelaere 10 minutes later.

Despite the changes, Fiorentina remained in control, and defender Luca Ranieri squandered a golden chance to seal the win in the 72nd minute, failing to beat Carnesecchi from close range after a well-placed pass from Lucas Beltran.

The defeat ended Atalanta’s impressive seven-month unbeaten away run in Serie A, which stretched back to their August loss to Inter.
