Newcastle boss Howe recovering from pneumonia

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe has expressed his gratitude for the “messages and warm wishes” he received after the club confirmed he is recovering in hospital following a pneumonia diagnosis.

The 47-year-old was admitted to hospital late on Friday after feeling unwell for several days. Newcastle announced on Saturday that Howe would be absent for Sunday’s Premier League clash against Manchester United at St James’ Park.

Despite his absence, the Magpies secured an impressive 4-1 victory, with assistant manager Jason Tindall revealing that Howe had watched the match from his hospital bed.

In a statement released by the club, Howe said:
“A huge thank you to everyone connected with Newcastle United and the wider football community for your messages and warm wishes. They have meant a lot to me and my family.

“I also want to pay tribute to our incredible NHS and the hospital staff who have treated me. I’m immensely grateful for the specialist care I’m receiving and, after a period of recovery, I look forward to being back as soon as possible.”

Tindall, along with coach Graeme Jones, will continue to lead the team for upcoming Premier League fixtures against Crystal Palace and Aston Villa on April 16 and 19, respectively.

The club confirmed that further updates on Howe’s condition will be shared in due course, adding:
“The club continues to extend its best wishes and support to Eddie and his family as he continues his recovery.”

Last month, Howe led Newcastle to their first domestic trophy in 70 years, lifting the Carabao Cup after a well-deserved win over Liverpool at Wembley. The club currently sits fourth in the Premier League table.

Born in Amersham, Howe has been at the Newcastle helm since November 2021, succeeding Steve Bruce as head coach. Under his guidance, the Magpies have finished 11th, 4th, and 7th in the last three seasons.

Across 165 matches in all competitions, Howe has overseen 84 wins, 36 draws, and 45 defeats. Notably, his side secured a memorable Champions League group-stage victory over Paris Saint-Germain during the 2023-24 campaign, although they narrowly missed out on reaching the knockout rounds.

Before joining Newcastle, Howe had two successful spells as Bournemouth manager, either side of a short tenure at Burnley. He has long been tipped as a potential future England manager, though he confirmed he was not interviewed for the role after Gareth Southgate’s departure, with Thomas Tuchel appointed as Three Lions boss last October.
