Al Shahania beat Al Gharafa in final round of Ooredoo Stars League

Doha: Pelle van Amersfoort netted a brace as Al Shahania defeated Al Gharafa 2-1 in Week 22 of the 2024-2025 season Ooredoo Stars League at the Thani Bin Jassim Stadium of Al Gharafa club on Friday.

The Dutchman scored in the (28th minute) and (42nd minute) after Joselu had given Al Gharafa the lead in the 16th minute.

The victory ensured that Al Shahania ended the season on 27 points and in seventh position, while Al Gharafa’s third position and 41 points remained unchanged.

Joselu almost gave Al Gharafa the lead in the fifth minute, but his header from the centre of the box went disappointingly slightly off target, while an overlapping run from Amersfoort almost ended in a goal for Al Shahania before the Dutchman was flagged offside.

The former Real Madrid star, Joselu, eventually set the ball rolling for The Cheetahs in the 16th minute when he nodded home from close range following an overhead pass by Hamid Ismail.

As it has been for most of the season, Amersfoort once again turned up when it mattered most as he got Al Shahania the equalizer in the 28th minute, confidently finishing off an assist from Francesco Antonucci as the game roared back to life.

Amersfoort and Antonucci once again combined effectively to give Al Shahania the lead in the 42nd minute, with Amersfoort nodding home from close range an inch-perfect cross from the Belgian attacking midfielder.

Al Shahania continued to press hard against Al Gharafa on resumption of the second half, and they came close to adding to their tally on a couple of occasions.

Despite several attempts on both sides, Al Shahania ensured their lead stayed as they ended the season on a triumphant note.
