Former Manchester United striker Javier Hernandez has been fined and issued a formal warning following sexist remarks made on social media.
The Mexican Football Federation (FMF) said the 37-year-old Chivas forward made comments on TikTok that “promote sexist stereotypes considered media violence and contrary to gender equality in sport.”
Hernandez, Mexico’s all-time leading scorer, said women are “failing” and “eradicating masculinity,” adding: “Don’t be afraid to be women, to allow yourselves to be led by a man.”
His remarks sparked widespread criticism, including from President Claudia Sheinbaum, Mexico’s first female president, who said: “Chicharito is a great footballer, but when it comes to his opinion on women… he still has a lot to learn.”
The FMF and Mexico’s top men’s and women’s leagues confirmed their Gender and Diversity Commission had launched an investigation and warned of harsher measures for future offences.
Chivas described Hernandez’s comments as “contrary to the club’s principles and values” and said “appropriate action” had been taken, without providing details.
Hernandez, who rejoined Chivas in 2023 on a two-year deal, previously enjoyed successful spells with Manchester United, Real Madrid, Bayer Leverkusen, West Ham, Sevilla, and LA Galaxy, winning two Premier League titles at Old Trafford.
