Reigning champions Paris St-Germain launched their Champions League defence with a commanding victory against Atalanta at the Parc des Princes.
Captain Marquinhos set the tone after just three minutes, sweeping in Fabian Ruiz’s low cross, before Khvicha Kvaratskhelia doubled the lead with a superb solo strike in the 39th minute.
Bradley Barcola saw a penalty saved by Marco Carnesecchi on the stroke of half-time, but the miss proved irrelevant as Nuno Mendes drilled in a third shortly after the restart.
Substitute Goncalo Ramos then capitalised on Raoul Bellanova’s late error to seal a fourth in stoppage time.
Atalanta, under former Southampton boss Ivan Juric, offered little threat to PSG keeper Lucas Chevalier, while Luis Enrique’s side showcased the attacking depth that made them champions last season.
PSG now face Barcelona and Bayer Leverkusen away in October before hosting Bayern Munich and Tottenham in November, while Atalanta will look to regroup against Club Brugge in their next group match on 30 September.
