Militao stunner and Mbappé strike keep Real Madrid perfect in La Liga

Real Madrid extended their flawless start to the La Liga season with a hard-fought 2-0 victory over Espanyol, making it five wins from five.

Espanyol frustrated the hosts with a deep defensive block that stifled much of Madrid’s trademark attacking rhythm.

But the breakthrough arrived after 22 minutes through a moment of brilliance from Eder Militao, whose thunderous 30-yard drive flew into the top corner.

Just after half-time, a lapse in concentration from the visitors allowed Kylian Mbappé to double the lead.

Left unmarked on the edge of the area, the Frenchman rifled Vinícius Jr’s pass inside the near post for his seventh goal in six matches this season.

There was further encouragement for Madrid late on as Jude Bellingham returned from shoulder surgery, coming off the bench in the 89th minute for his first appearance since July’s Club World Cup.

The result ended Espanyol’s unbeaten start to the campaign, having previously won three and drawn one of their opening fixtures.
