Gabriel’s late header hands Arsenal victory over Newcastle as Gunners two points behind leaders

Gabriel scored a 96th-minute header as Arsenal came from behind to snatch victory over Newcastle United in a fiery Premier League clash at St James’ Park.

The Brazilian defender rose to meet Martin Ødegaard’s corner deep into stoppage time, sparking wild celebrations from Mikel Arteta and his coaching staff.

Mikel Merino had earlier pulled Newcastle level with a header that struck the post before crossing the line, cancelling out Nick Woltemade’s towering opener.

But Gabriel’s late intervention secured three crucial points that move Arsenal within two of leaders Liverpool and left the hosts stunned.

Newcastle looked set for victory when Woltemade powered home Sandro Tonali’s cross, outjumping Gabriel to beat goalkeeper David Raya.

Arsenal’s protests over contact in the box fell on deaf ears, and moments earlier they had seen a penalty overturned by VAR after Nick Pope appeared to foul Viktor Gyökeres.

Referee Jarred Gillett initially pointed to the spot but, after reviewing the incident, reversed his decision, ruling Pope had played the ball cleanly.

Despite the setbacks, Arsenal showed resilience to turn the game around, with Gabriel delivering the decisive moment in the sixth minute of added time.
