Gerrard in talks over Rangers return as club Seek successor to Martin

Steven Gerrard is set to hold talks with Rangers over a possible return as head coach.

BBC Sport understands the Scottish Premiership side are open to reappointing the former Liverpool and England midfielder, and are now seeking confirmation of his interest in taking the job.

Rangers are expected to meet with Gerrard in the coming days as they begin the process of finding a replacement for Russell Martin, who was sacked on Sunday.

Sources say Gerrard is among several candidates under consideration, though his strong backing from supporters and past success at Ibrox have made him one of the frontrunners for the role.

Gerrard previously managed Rangers from 2018 to 2021, guiding the club to their first league title in a decade before leaving for Aston Villa. He was dismissed by the Premier League side in October 2022 after a difficult start to his second season.

The 44-year-old later managed Saudi Pro League side Al-Ettifaq, leaving by mutual consent in January. He was briefly linked with a Rangers return before Martin’s appointment in June.

Speaking on the Rio Ferdinand Presents Podcast earlier this week, Gerrard said he was eager to return to management but only at a club capable of challenging for silverware.

“I want to be at a team that’s going to compete to win, because I think that suits me better,” he said, revealing he had received “five or six really interesting phone calls” since departing Saudi Arabia.

Martin’s brief spell in charge saw Rangers win just five of 17 matches, leaving them eighth in the Premiership table — 11 points behind leaders Hearts.
