De Ligt’s last-gasp header earns Manchester United dramatic draw at Tottenham

Matthijs de Ligt rescued Manchester United with a dramatic 96th-minute header in a 2-2 draw at Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday, denying the hosts victory after Richarlison’s late strike appeared to have sealed the points.

Bryan Mbuemo opened the scoring for United in the 32nd minute, heading in Amad Diallo’s cross at the back post after Spurs failed to clear their lines in a largely subdued first half that drew boos from sections of the home crowd.

Tottenham looked brighter after the break and substitute Mathys Tel levelled in the 84th minute before Richarlison turned the game on its head with a close-range finish seven minutes later.

However, United struck back deep into stoppage time when de Ligt rose to meet Bruno Fernandes’s corner, ensuring Erik ten Hag’s side stretched their unbeaten run to five matches.

Both teams now sit on 18 points from 11 games, with Spurs third and United seventh on goal difference.
