Kane rescues Bayern with late equaliser as record winning run ends against Union Berlin

Bayern Munich’s perfect start to the season came to an end despite a stoppage-time equaliser from Harry Kane in a 2-2 draw with Union Berlin on Saturday.

The Bundesliga champions had won all 16 of their matches in all competitions heading into the game — the best-ever start to a season by any men’s team from Europe’s top five leagues — but missed the chance to equal their club record for consecutive league victories.

Bayern fell behind for the first time this season when Danilho Doekhi’s shot from a corner slipped under Manuel Neuer. It was also the first time they had conceded in the opening half of a match this campaign.

Luis Díaz quickly restored parity with a spectacular strike — his third goal in two games — after brilliantly keeping the ball in play, spinning past a defender, and firing home from a tight angle at the near post.

However, Union regained the lead when Kane, in a rare defensive mishap, inadvertently headed a free-kick into the path of Doekhi, who converted his second of the game.

The England captain redeemed himself deep into stoppage time, rising to head home Tom Bischof’s cross for his 13th Bundesliga goal of the season and to preserve Bayern’s unbeaten run.

Bayern now turn their attention to a home fixture against Freiburg on 22 November, while Union Berlin travel to St Pauli the following day.
