Indian Wells 2026: Day Recap as Alcaraz, Medvedev, Sinner and Zverev Reach Semi-Finals

The 2026 BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells delivered another thrilling day of tennis as the tournament moved into its decisive stages in California. Several of the world’s biggest stars were in action, and the results helped shape the semifinal line-ups in both the men’s and women’s draws.

Often referred to as the “fifth Grand Slam”, Indian Wells is one of the most prestigious tournaments on both the ATP and WTA Tours, and this year’s edition has continued that tradition with high-quality matches, surprises, and dramatic moments.

Alcaraz Continues Dominant Run

World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz continued his impressive form in the California desert by defeating Cameron Norrie in straight sets 6–3, 6–4. The victory secured Alcaraz a place in the semifinals and extended his remarkable winning streak this season.

The Spaniard once again displayed the athleticism and shot-making ability that has made him one of the most exciting players in the sport. His combination of aggressive baseline play, drop shots, and explosive movement kept Norrie under pressure throughout the match.

With the win, Alcaraz set up a blockbuster semifinal showdown against former US Open champion Daniil Medvedev.

Medvedev Ends Draper’s Title Defense

Medvedev secured his semifinal place after defeating defending champion Jack Draper 6–1, 7–5 in a match that featured controversy late in the second set.

Draper had been one of the standout players earlier in the tournament after producing a major upset by defeating Novak Djokovic in a dramatic three-set battle earlier in the week.

However, the quarterfinal proved to be the end of his run. Medvedev dominated the opening set with his trademark consistency from the baseline before holding his nerve in a tight second set. A controversial umpire decision late in the match disrupted Draper’s momentum and ultimately helped Medvedev close out the victory.

The Russian now heads into the semifinals with strong form and an eight-match winning streak.

Sinner Advances with Composed Performance

Another top contender progressing through the draw was Jannik Sinner, who defeated Brazilian teenager Joao Fonseca in straight sets to reach the quarter-final stage earlier in the tournament.

Sinner’s performance showcased his trademark precision and power from the baseline. Despite Fonseca’s impressive shot-making and fearless approach, the Italian’s experience and consistency proved decisive.

His victory ensured he would meet Alexander Zverev in the semifinals, setting up another fascinating clash between two of the ATP Tour’s most dangerous players.

Zverev Completes the Semi-Final Line-Up

Zverev booked his place in the final four after defeating French rising star Arthur Fils.

The German produced a composed performance, using his powerful serve and aggressive groundstrokes to control key moments of the match. The victory also marked an important milestone for Zverev, as it meant he has now reached the semifinals at all nine ATP Masters 1000 tournaments during his career.

With Sinner awaiting him in the next round, the match promises to be one of the most exciting contests of the tournament.

Women’s Draw Produces Major Surprises

While the men’s competition featured the expected stars, the women’s tournament produced several surprising results.

Top seed Aryna Sabalenka continued her strong campaign by defeating Canadian teenager Victoria Mboko 7–6, 6–4 to reach the semifinals.

Sabalenka’s power game proved too much for Mboko, although the young Canadian showed impressive resilience throughout the match.

One of the biggest shocks of the tournament came when Elina Svitolina defeated world No. 2 Iga Swiątek 6–2, 46, 6–4 to reach her first Indian Wells semifinal in several years.

Svitolina’s victory demonstrated her experience and tactical intelligence, as she successfully disrupted Swiątek’s rhythm with deep groundstrokes and clever court positioning.

Rybakina and Noskova Also Advance

Another major contender progressing through the draw was Elena Rybakina, who defeated Jessica Pegula 6–1, 7–6 to reach the semifinals.

The victory ensures Rybakina will climb to a career-high world ranking of No. 2, highlighting the remarkable consistency she has shown over the past year.

Meanwhile, Czech star Linda Noskova advanced after defeating Australian qualifier Talia Gibson to reach the final four of a WTA 1000 event for the second time in her career.

Semi-Final Matchups Set

With the quarter-final matches completed, the semifinals are now confirmed:

Men’s Semi-Finals

  • Carlos Alcaraz vs Daniil Medvedev

  • Jannik Sinner vs Alexander Zverev

Women’s Semi-Finals

  • Aryna Sabalenka vs Linda Noskova

  • Elina Svitolina vs Elena Rybakina

These matchups promise high-quality tennis as the tournament moves closer to its climax.

Tournament Nearing Its Conclusion

The 2026 BNP Paribas Open, which runs until March 15, remains one of the most important events outside the Grand Slams.

With several of the world’s best players still in contention, fans can expect an exciting finish to the tournament in the coming days.

If the performances so far are any indication, Indian Wells 2026 could produce one of the most memorable finals in recent years.
