Woods set for tentative return at TGL, eyes possible Masters comeback

Los Angeles: Fifteen-time major champion Tiger Woods is set to make a tentative return to competitive golf on Tuesday when he features in the TGL league, marking his first appearance in weeks as he continues his recovery from injury.

The 50-year-old American will represent Jupiter Links in the finals of the technology-driven indoor competition, organisers confirmed, signalling a cautious step back into action after a prolonged absence from top-level golf.

Woods, widely regarded as one of the greatest players in the sport’s history, has been sidelined since the The Open Championship, following a series of injuries and surgeries. His most recent procedure, a disc replacement operation in October, added to a long list of physical setbacks that have disrupted his career in recent years.

Despite the challenges, Woods has continued to work towards a comeback, recently indicating that participation in the The Masters Tournament remains a possibility. The prestigious event is scheduled to take place at Augusta National Golf Club from April 9 to 12.

Speaking last month, Woods did not rule out competing at Augusta, offering a cautiously optimistic update on his recovery. He revealed that his rehabilitation had progressed from short-game drills to full-swing practice, a significant milestone in his return to fitness.

“I keep working on it, trying to get stronger, trying to get more endurance in this body and trying to get it at a level at which I can play at the highest level again,” Woods said.

The former world number one has an illustrious record at Augusta, having claimed five Masters titles, including a memorable triumph in 2019 that ended an 11-year major championship drought and marked one of the most remarkable comebacks in sporting history.

Woods’ career has also been defined by resilience in the face of adversity. In 2021, he suffered severe leg injuries in a car crash that raised serious doubts about his future in the sport. Since then, his appearances have been limited, with his focus largely on recovery and selective participation.

His return at the TGL league, an innovative competition combining advanced simulator technology with players from the PGA Tour, is expected to provide a clearer indication of his readiness to compete at the highest level once again.

While questions remain over his long-term fitness, Woods’ presence alone continues to generate excitement across the golfing world, with fans and analysts closely watching his progress ahead of the Masters.

As the countdown to Augusta begins, all eyes will be on whether the veteran can once again defy the odds and mount another comeback on one of golf’s grandest stages.
