Sporting hold Arsenal in tight first-half stalemate

Sporting CP and Arsenal went into the break level at 0-0 after a tense and closely fought first half in their Champions League quarter-final clash.

The game started with intensity, but chances were limited as both teams showed clear tactical discipline. Sporting had the better of the early moments, coming closest to breaking the deadlock when Maximiliano Araújo struck the crossbar, a warning sign for Arsenal early on.

Arsenal, however, gradually grew into the game.

They dominated possession, controlling over 60% of the ball, but struggled to translate that control into clear chances. Their build-up play was patient, but Sporting’s defensive shape remained compact and difficult to break down.

The midfield battle became the defining feature of the half. Challenges were intense, space was limited, and neither side was willing to overcommit. Sporting relied on quick transitions, while Arsenal focused on structured possession and territorial control.

Despite Arsenal seeing more of the ball, it was Sporting who arguably had the more dangerous moments, with their direct attacking approach causing occasional problems.

As the half progressed, the tempo dipped slightly, with both teams becoming more cautious. Fouls began to interrupt the flow, including a booking for Hidemasa Morita after a late challenge.

At the break, the score remains 0-0, a reflection of a game defined more by structure and discipline than attacking quality.

The second half now becomes crucial, with both sides knowing that one moment could decide the tie.
