Real Madrid dropped valuable points in the LaLiga title race after being held to a 1-1 draw by Girona at the Santiago Bernabéu — a result that further strengthens Barcelona’s grip at the top.
Coming into the game, the pressure was already clear.
With Barcelona sitting six points ahead in the standings, Madrid needed a win to keep the gap manageable. Instead, they were left frustrated by a disciplined Girona side that executed their game plan to near perfection.
The first half told a familiar story.
Madrid dominated possession, controlled territory, and pushed Girona deep into their own half. Midfielders like Jude Bellingham and Federico Valverde dictated the tempo, while Vinícius Júnior and Kylian Mbappé tried to stretch the defense.
But for all their control, the breakthrough never came.
Girona stayed compact, defended in numbers, and forced Madrid into low-quality chances. Frustration began to creep in — highlighted by a booking for Mbappé late in the first half as tensions rose.
At half-time, it remained 0-0 — and already felt like a problem for Madrid.
The breakthrough finally arrived early in the second half.
In the 50th minute, Valverde stepped up and unleashed a powerful strike from distance that found the back of the net, giving Madrid a deserved 1-0 lead and lifting the energy inside the Bernabéu.
At that point, it looked like Madrid would push on.
But Girona had other ideas.
Just over ten minutes later, in the 61st minute, Thomas Lemar produced a brilliant equalizer, finishing off a well-worked move to silence the home crowd and bring the game back to level terms.
That goal changed everything.
Madrid pushed again, increasing the tempo and throwing more players forward in search of a winner. They created chances, dominated possession (over 56%), and registered more shots on target, but Girona held firm under pressure.
The visitors remained dangerous on the counter, exploiting spaces whenever Madrid overcommitted, and ensured the hosts never fully settled again.
As the game entered the final stages, the urgency was clear.
Madrid pressed, crossed, and probed — but without the cutting edge needed to break Girona down. The final whistle was met with frustration, as what started as a must-win night ended in dropped points.
At full time, it finished 1-1.
For Madrid, it’s another setback in a title race where there is little margin for error. Dropping points at home — especially with Barcelona leading the way — could prove costly.
For Girona, it’s a huge result.
Disciplined, resilient, and clinical when it mattered, they leave the Bernabéu with a deserved point and a performance that underlines their growing confidence.
For Madrid, the pressure just got heavier.
