Miami update offers no clear timetable for Argentine star

Miami: With only weeks to go before the World Cup, Lionel Messi finds himself at the center of a major injury scare. Inter Miami announced on Monday that medical tests have diagnosed the Argentine superstar with muscle fatigue in his left hamstring.
The Major League Soccer club did not provide a specific timeline for Messi’s return. The 38-year-old icon abruptly exited Sunday’s 6-4 victory over Philadelphia in the 73rd minute after grabbing the back of his left leg. However, he appeared to be walking normally as he headed to the locker room.
“After undergoing further medical tests this Monday, the initial diagnosis indicates an overload associated with muscle fatigue in his left hamstring,” Inter Miami said in an official statement. “The timeline for his return to physical activity will depend on his clinical and functional progress.”
Countdown to the World Cup
The vague update leaves soccer fans holding their breath as Argentina prepares to defend its crown at the World Cup, which kicks off on June 11 across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
- June 6: Argentina vs. Honduras (Friendly)
- June 9: Argentina vs. Iceland (Friendly)
- June 11: World Cup tournament begins
- June 16: Argentina’s opening match vs. Algeria (Kansas City)
Managing the workload
Since joining Inter Miami in 2023, Messi’s workload has been carefully managed, with team staff frequently resting him during congested schedules. MLS has already paused its season for the upcoming tournament.
While the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner has not officially confirmed his participation, he is widely expected to anchor the squad, marking a record-matching sixth appearance at the World Cup finals. Argentina’s official roster is expected to be announced next week.
