Cadiz request La Liga suspension after VAR error quarrel

Barcelona: La Liga side Cadiz have requested the whole Spanish top flight be temporarily suspended, in a statement on Wednesday, until their appeal against a refereeing error against them is resolved.

On January 16, relegation-battling Cadiz were leading bottom side Elche by a single goal when Ezequiel Ponce equalised in the 81st minute, having returned from an offside position to play the ball in the build up.

The infringement was not noticed either by the match officials or those operating VAR, and the game finished 1-1.

Cadiz asked the Spanish football federation (RFEF) to annul the result and replay the last nine minutes of the game, but their request was not granted as the RFEF declared themselves unable to take action.

Cadiz said in a statement Wednesday they had taken the case to the Court of Arbtiration for Sport (CAS) and asked for La Liga to be temporarily suspended to “prevent the damages and harm to Cadiz” increasing, reiterating their earlier requests to replay the end of the game with the score restored to 1-0.

Cadiz said in the statement they were “seriously harmed” by “unfortunate and negligent action by the refereeing team, specifically the referees in the VAR room.”

The Andalucian side are currently 16th, two points clear of the relegation zone.
