A 57th-minute goal secured the US women’s football team its fifth Olympic gold medal after beating Brazil 1-0 in the tournament final Saturday at the Paris 2024 Games.

The US team finished an undefeated run with a title in their first ever international campaign under new coach Emma Hayes.

Alyssa Naeher, goalkeeper for team US, produced a one-handed save on Adriana’s header in stoppage time at Parc des Princes.

The result is sure to be heavy on the hearts of team Brazil and its iconic star, Marta.

Marta, a six-time world player of the year had never won Olympic gold nor reached World Cup glory. The Paris Games are expected to be her last major international tournament.

The seasoned Brazil footballer had started on the bench after having served a two-game suspension following what was deemed a dangerous foul in a group stage match against Spain.

The 2024 Paris Games final marks the third team the USA has beat Brazil in an Olympic final, the other times being in 2004 at Athens and 2008 in Beijing.
Marta was playing her sixth Olympic Games.
