Fulham goalkeeper Bernd Leno emerged as the hero, making two crucial saves in the penalty shootout to knock Manchester United out of the FA Cup. The Cottagers progressed to the quarter-finals after a thrilling encounter that ended 1-1 after extra time.
Calvin Bassey had given Fulham the lead in first-half stoppage time, but Bruno Fernandes equalized with a stunning strike from the edge of the area. Both sides had opportunities to win the tie in regular and extra time, with Leno producing outstanding saves to deny Emile Smith-Rowe, Chido Obi, and Alejandro Garnacho.
In the penalty shootout, Leno denied Victor Lindelof and Joshua Zirkzee, while Fulham’s spot-kick takers held their nerve to secure a famous victory.
“We’re delighted to be in the quarter-finals,” said Fulham manager Marco Silva. “Bernd Leno was fantastic tonight, and our players showed great character and determination.”
The win keeps Fulham’s FA Cup dreams alive, as they aim to replicate their only FA Cup final appearance in 1975.
Fulham will face their next opponent in the quarter-finals, with the draw set to take place in the coming days.
