Inter Milan see off Feyenoord to reach last eight

Inter Milan booked their place in the Champions League quarter-finals with a convincing victory over Feyenoord at San Siro.

Marcus Thuram opened the scoring on the night, weaving into the box before rifling a shot into the top corner to put Inter 1-0 up and 3-0 ahead on aggregate.

Feyenoord briefly sparked hopes of a comeback when Hakan Çalhanoğlu conceded a penalty for a clumsy challenge on Jakub Moder. The former Brighton midfielder converted from the spot to reduce the deficit.

However, Çalhanoğlu made amends after the break, calmly slotting home a penalty after Thomas Beelen fouled Mehdi Taremi in the area.

Thuram came close to extending Inter’s lead, narrowly missing the target with a powerful strike in the absence of captain Lautaro Martínez, who started on the bench.

Despite Feyenoord showing glimpses of attacking threat, Serie A leaders Inter remained in control. Yann Sommer produced a fine save to deny Hugo Bueno’s long-range effort, while Givairo Read saw a shot blocked as the visitors managed 14 attempts but only found the net once.

Thuram and Çalhanoğlu Shine for Inter

Thuram continued his impressive European form, scoring in back-to-back Champions League matches for the first time in his career. He became only the second Inter player to net in both legs of a Champions League knockout tie, following Dejan Stanković against Ajax in 2005-06.

His night was only marred by a yellow card for simulation and a late effort that crashed off the crossbar after a dazzling solo run.

Meanwhile, Çalhanoğlu’s goal made history, as he became the first Turkish player to both score and assist 10 goals in the Champions League.

His strike helped ensure Inter’s progression, as they now prepare to face Bayern Munich in the quarter-finals in April, aiming for a second Champions League final in three seasons.
