Dortmund fight back to beat Lille and reach quarters

Borussia Dortmund staged a comeback to defeat Lille and secure a spot in the Champions League quarter-finals.

The French side struck early, with Jonathan David slotting a first-time finish through Gregor Kobel’s legs in the fifth minute, giving Lille a 2-1 aggregate lead following the 1-1 draw in Germany.

Dortmund pressed for an equalizer and found their breakthrough in the 54th minute when captain Emre Can converted a penalty after Thomas Meunier fouled Serhou Guirassy in the box.

Maximilian Beier came close with a header before making amends in the 65th minute, smashing Guirassy’s pass into the roof of the net.

David had a golden opportunity to restore parity and send Lille into their first-ever Champions League quarter-final, but his close-range strike was saved, while Hakon Haraldsson’s dipping effort was tipped over by Kobel.

Dortmund, managed by Niko Kovac, will now face La Liga powerhouse Barcelona next month.

Guirassy Shines to Set Up Barcelona Clash

Guirassy continued his stellar debut season with Dortmund, registering his fourth Champions League assist against Lille.

The Guinea international now has 14 goal involvements in the competition (10 goals, four assists), tying Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah for the most by an African player in a single Champions League campaign (2017-18).

Though he didn’t score, Guirassy proved a constant menace to Lille’s defense and won the crucial penalty that sparked Dortmund’s fightback.

This victory marks the first time since February 2021—against Sevilla—that Dortmund have won a Champions League match after conceding first.

Having reached the quarter-finals for the ninth time, they will need Guirassy at his best if they hope to overcome Barcelona in the next round.
