Newcastle stun Liverpool in League Cup final to end 56-year trophy drought

Newcastle United made history at Wembley Stadium on Sunday, defeating Liverpool 2-1 in the League Cup final to end their 56-year trophy drought.

Dan Burn and Alexander Isak scored the crucial goals for Eddie Howe’s side, who produced a stunning display to leave the runaway Premier League leaders shell-shocked.

Burn’s powerful header in the 45th minute gave Newcastle the lead, and Isak’s superb first-time finish in the 52nd minute doubled their advantage.

Federico Chiesa’s stoppage-time strike set up a nervous finale, but Newcastle held on to secure their first major silverware since the 1969 Inter-Cities Fairs Cup.

The victory marks a turning point for Newcastle, who had endured decades of underachievement and self-inflicted wounds.

The club’s Saudi-backed consortium, which took over in 2021, has invested heavily in the team, and Howe’s astute leadership has transformed them into silverware winners.

Liverpool, who sit 12 points clear at the top of the Premier League, were left reeling from their second defeat in a week, following their Champions League last 16 exit on penalties against Paris Saint-Germain.
