Liverpool edge closer to title with narrow win over Everton

Liverpool secured Merseyside bragging rights with a crucial victory over Everton, edging closer to their long-awaited Premier League title.

Arne Slot’s side now need just 13 points from a possible 24 to clinch a historic, record-equalling 20th top-flight triumph.

Despite Everton’s resolute defensive setup, the Reds found their breakthrough thanks to a moment of brilliance from Diogo Jota. The Portuguese forward, largely quiet for much of the game, latched onto Luis Diaz’s clever backheel, danced past defenders, and coolly slotted home to seal the win.

Earlier, controversy surrounded Everton defender James Tarkowski, who was fortunate to escape with only a yellow card after a dangerous follow-through on Alexis Mac Allister. VAR opted against upgrading the decision, and Liverpool nearly capitalized on the resulting free-kick, with Dominik Szoboszlai curling his effort just wide. Mohamed Salah also tested Jordan Pickford with a header at the back post.

Everton threatened on the counter, with Beto proving a handful for Liverpool’s defense. He had a goal disallowed for offside after overpowering Virgil van Dijk and later struck the post when one-on-one with Caoimhin Kelleher.

Liverpool pressed harder in the second half, with Ryan Gravenberch forcing Pickford into a sharp save from distance. But it was Jota’s clinical strike in the 56th minute that ultimately made the difference, bringing the Reds one step closer to glory.
