Juve held to draw by Roma, Atalanta slumps to 3rd straight loss

Juventus missed the opportunity to move into Serie A’s Champions League positions on Sunday, as they were held to a 1-1 draw by fellow top-four hopefuls Roma.

Roma’s Eldor Shomurodov scored four minutes after halftime to cancel out Manuel Locatelli’s superb volley, which had given Juventus the lead just before the break.

The draw leaves Juventus fifth in the table, level on 56 points with fourth-placed Bologna.

The Turin giants will move above Bologna on goal difference if Vincenzo Italiano’s side lose to Napoli on Monday night.

Meanwhile, Atalanta slumped to their third consecutive loss, falling 1-0 to sixth-placed Lazio. Gustav Isaksen scored the winner for Lazio after a defensive mix-up in the 54th minute.

Atalanta’s defeat marks a significant downturn in form for the provincial upstarts, who had been contenders for the league title just a few weeks ago.

The team hasn’t scored in their last four home league fixtures, and Sunday’s defeat has raised questions about the future of coach Gian Piero Gasperini.

Roma, on the other hand, showed encouraging signs despite snapping their seven-match winning streak.

The team is unbeaten in 15 matches since losing to Como in mid-December and will face Lazio next weekend in a highly anticipated derby.
