Rice scores two free-kicks as Arsenal put three past Madrid

Declan Rice Stuns Real Madrid with Stunning Free-Kick Double as Arsenal Take Commanding Lead in Champions League Quarter-Final

Declan Rice lit up the Emirates Stadium with two sensational free-kick goals—his first ever in his career—as Arsenal secured a dominant 3-0 victory over Real Madrid in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final.

Mikel Arteta had called on Arsenal supporters to arrive early and generate an electric atmosphere, and the team responded in kind, starting with relentless energy and intensity.

The Gunners peppered the Madrid penalty area with dangerous crosses in the opening minutes, setting the tone for what would become a memorable European night in north London.

Real Madrid’s first meaningful chance didn’t come until the 20th minute, when Vinícius Jr. curled an effort just wide. From that point, however, it was Arsenal’s show—and Declan Rice’s night.

The breakthrough came in the 58th minute. Awarded a free-kick just outside the box, Rice stepped up and bent a perfectly struck shot around the Madrid wall and into the bottom corner past Thibaut Courtois. It was a landmark moment for the midfielder—not just his first Champions League goal, but the first free-kick goal of his professional career.

Twelve minutes later, Rice repeated the feat. This time from a deeper position, he arced the ball into the top right-hand corner with unerring precision, leaving Courtois rooted and Madrid in shock.

The Emirates erupted again just five minutes later when Mikel Merino added a third. The midfielder latched onto a loose ball inside the box and curled a clinical low finish into the bottom corner, further punishing a shell-shocked Madrid side.

As the game neared its conclusion, Real Madrid’s night went from bad to worse. Eduardo Camavinga was sent off in stoppage time after receiving a second yellow card, compounding the misery for Carlo Ancelotti’s team.

This was a statement performance from Arsenal, who have not reached the Champions League semi-finals since the 2008-09 season. Now, with a commanding three-goal advantage, they have one foot firmly planted in the last four.

Arsenal Give Fans a Night to Dream

Despite being the less experienced side in Europe, Arsenal outclassed the 15-time champions with a blend of intensity, composure, and attacking flair that Madrid simply couldn’t match.

Arteta’s tactical choices—despite a season plagued by injuries—proved spot-on, with Jakub Kiwior partnering William Saliba effectively in defense and Mikel Merino thriving in a more advanced role in place of the absent Kai Havertz.

Bukayo Saka, in particular, tormented David Alaba throughout the match, delivering dangerous crosses that could have added to the scoreline in the first half. Arsenal’s pressing, sharpness, and creativity overwhelmed Madrid, who were often left chasing shadows.

Rice’s double saw the Emirates rise to a deafening roar, while Merino’s goal capped a complete team performance. The Spaniard now has five goals in his last nine appearances—a testament to his growing influence.

Arsenal could have easily extended their lead, with Jude Bellingham and Alaba both making crucial goal-line clearances. Yet even at 3-0, it was a night that will long be remembered in Arsenal folklore.

Madrid Falter on the Big Stage

Real Madrid entered the tie in indifferent form, with just two wins from their last five matches, and it showed. Despite Courtois acknowledging the threat Arsenal posed from set-pieces ahead of the match, the visitors looked disorganized and lethargic throughout.

Madrid’s attacking spark was noticeably absent. Kylian Mbappé’s best effort was comfortably saved by David Raya, and Vinícius Jr. was largely contained.

The defensive fragility that has haunted Madrid of late was evident once more—they’ve now kept just two clean sheets in their past 11 outings.

To progress, Madrid will need to produce a monumental turnaround in the second leg at the Santiago Bernabéu, needing to score at least four goals without reply.

While the Spanish giants have a history of Champions League miracles, this result leaves them with a mountain to climb.

For Arsenal, the dream of a Champions League semi-final is alive and well. Another performance with this level of belief, quality, and resilience in the return leg could see them make that dream a reality.
