Rune stuns Alcaraz to claim Barcelona open title

Holger Rune produced a stunning performance to defeat Carlos Alcaraz 7-6 (8-6), 6-2 and claim the Barcelona Open title.

The 21-year-old Dane matched Alcaraz shot-for-shot and held firm in tight moments to secure his first ATP Tour title in two years.

Rune, who was forced to retire in Monte Carlo last week due to illness, drew inspiration from Novak Djokovic’s victory over Alcaraz in the Olympic final at Roland Garros.

“I told myself, what did Novak do when he beat him?” Rune said. “I kind of played it in my mind, the Olympic final, and I thought to myself, let’s try to play that kind of style.”

The first set was a high-quality encounter, with both players sending the ball thudding around the court.

Rune was superior at the net, winning 12 of 16 points, and ultimately secured the set tie-break.

In the second set, Alcaraz struggled to find his rhythm after a medical timeout and Rune reeled off five consecutive games to seal the win.

The victory will see Rune return to the top 10 rankings on Monday.

Meanwhile, Alexander Zverev claimed his first title of the year by beating Ben Shelton 6-2, 6-4 in the Munich Open final on his 28th birthday.

The pair will likely face each other again in the upcoming Madrid Masters.
