Giro d’Italia to honour late Pope Francis with symbolic start in Vatican City

The late Pope Francis, who passed away on 21 April, will be commemorated with a symbolic, neutralised start in Vatican City during the final stage of the 2025 Giro d’Italia.

On 1 June, riders will pass through Vatican City before the official start of Stage 21 in Rome, marking a tribute to the former pontiff in the Jubilee year. The 2025 Giro begins in Albania on 9 May.

This marks the third consecutive year the race concludes in Rome, and only the seventh time in the Giro’s 108-edition history.

“This presence is renewed this year with an exciting symbolic start from Vatican City, a tribute to Pope Francis, his persona, and his message of hope in the Jubilee year,” said Rome Mayor Roberto Gualtieri.

The final stage will feature eight laps of a 9.5-kilometre circuit through the streets of the Italian capital. The Giro has passed through Vatican City on two prior occasions.
