Arsenal’s Champions League dream over after semi-final defeat to PSG

Arsenal’s hopes of lifting the Champions League for the first time came to an end as they fell to a 2-1 defeat against Paris Saint-Germain in the semi-final second leg at the Parc des Princes.

Trailing by a goal from the first leg, Mikel Arteta’s side made a promising start but were dealt a blow when Fabian Ruiz fired PSG ahead on the night after 27 minutes, doubling the French champions’ aggregate lead.

PSG had a golden chance to extend their advantage further when they were awarded a penalty following a controversial VAR decision against Myles Lewis-Skelly for handball. However, Vitinha’s spot-kick was off target.

Achraf Hakimi made no mistake in the 72nd minute, finishing off a sweeping move to put PSG firmly in control at 3-0 on aggregate.

Bukayo Saka pulled one back for Arsenal just four minutes later, but he missed a clear-cut opportunity moments after, firing over from close range when it seemed easier to score.

PSG, having now knocked out Liverpool, Aston Villa, and Arsenal in succession, will face Inter Milan in the final on May 31 as they chase their first Champions League title.
