Evra’s MMA debut on hold as PFL Paris delayed

The Professional Fighters League (PFL) has announced that its upcoming Paris event, originally scheduled for 23 May at the Accor Arena, will be postponed to a later date.

The event was set to feature French lightweight Mansour Barnaoui in the main event against Archie Colgan, as well as the surprise MMA debut of former Manchester United and France defender Patrice Evra.

No official reason has been given for the rescheduling, and a new date for the event has yet to be confirmed.

Evra, 43, retired from football in 2019 and has been training in MMA since 2016 alongside PFL fighter and close friend Cédric Doumbé.

His debut bout was expected to take place at welterweight, although his opponent had not yet been announced.

Last month, Evra joked on social media that he was ready to face former rival Luis Suárez, referencing their infamous history and Suárez’s multiple biting incidents.

“They asked who I wanna face. I said Luis Suárez. I’ll pay out of pocket. He can even bite me,” Evra wrote.

In a brief comment through the PFL’s announcement, Evra added: “I love this game too.”

Since retiring from football, Evra has worked as a television pundit. The PFL is widely regarded as the second-largest MMA organization globally, following the UFC.
