Trent Alexander-Arnold joins Real Madrid in €10m deal ahead of Club World Cup

Trent Alexander-Arnold is set to become a Real Madrid player on Sunday, 1 June, after Liverpool agreed to release him from his contract early for a transfer fee.

Sources at Liverpool claim the fee is €10 million (£8.4 million), paid in full upfront by Real Madrid. However, reports from the Spanish club suggest the amount paid may be lower.

The deal allows the 26-year-old England right-back to join Real Madrid in time for the Club World Cup, which kicks off on 14 June in the United States. Alexander-Arnold’s Liverpool contract was due to expire on 30 June, meaning he could have left on a free transfer.

Having already announced his departure from Liverpool this summer, Alexander-Arnold has signed a six-year contract with Real Madrid that includes a €1 billion (£840 million) buy-out clause.

FIFA has approved an additional registration window from 1 to 10 June to allow clubs to add players ahead of the expanded month-long Club World Cup. Real Madrid’s first match is against Saudi club Al-Hilal on 18 June in Miami.

Before that, Alexander-Arnold may add to his 33 England caps, having been named in the squad for a World Cup qualifier against Andorra on 7 June and a friendly against Senegal on 10 June.

Shortly after confirming Alexander-Arnold’s departure, Liverpool completed the signing of Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen for €35 million (£29.5 million).
