Manchester United agree deal to sign Brazil striker Cunha from Wolves

Manchester United have reached an agreement with Wolves to sign Brazilian forward Matheus Cunha, with the 26-year-old set to become the club’s first signing of the summer.

United have triggered the £62.5 million release clause in Cunha’s contract at Molineux, paving the way for the former Atletico Madrid striker to sign a five-year deal at Old Trafford, with the option of an additional year.

Cunha was in Manchester over the weekend to undergo his medical, and while the transfer remains subject to visa clearance and final registration steps, the move is expected to be completed once the player returns from international duty with Brazil later this month.

He departed the Lowry Hotel in Salford on Sunday morning to join up with the Brazilian national team ahead of their World Cup qualifier against Ecuador on Thursday night (00:00 BST Friday), which marks Carlo Ancelotti’s debut as head coach.

Cunha has been a standout performer for Wolves since his permanent move from Atletico in 2023. He notched 31 goals in 76 appearances for the club, having first impressed during a six-month loan spell that prompted Wolves to pay £35 million to secure his services.

New United manager Ruben Amorim is prioritising attacking reinforcements following the club’s disastrous 2024/25 Premier League campaign, which saw them slump to a historic low of 15th place. Cunha’s arrival is seen as a key step in rebuilding the squad’s firepower.
