Rwanda hosts the world as first UCI Road World Championships in Africa begins

Doha: The UCI Road World Championships commenced in Kigali on Sunday, signifying a historic achievement as this esteemed race takes place on African territory for the first time in its 103-year existence.

Organized by the Ministry of Sports in partnership with the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI), the Rwanda Cycling Federation (FERWACY), and a broad coalition of public and private stakeholders, this significant edition unites over 1,000 elite cyclists from around the world.

Among the nations represented, Qatar is participating with its national team, which includes both the men’s and women’s squads, led by Mr. Marwan Al-Jelham and coached by Mr. Tariq Ibrahim. Their involvement underscores the Qatar Cycling Association’s dedication to fostering young talent and equipping athletes for international competition.

Qatari cyclist Ms. Lulwa, who has been training in Rwanda ahead of the championship, shared her enthusiasm: “I have been training here, and I recommend everyone to come and train in Rwanda. To compete here is very special because it’s the first time Africa is hosting the championship, and it is also my first time competing at a world championship. I hope this championship allows the world to see African people.”

The championship guarantees an exhilarating event set against the backdrop of Rwanda’s renowned landscapes, featuring courses that navigate legendary ascents like the Mur de Kigali and Mont Kigali. These paths will challenge even the most experienced cyclists, all while providing stunning views to millions of fans globally.

Speaking at the opening, Rwanda Minister of Sports, Hon. Nelly Mukazayire emphasized the broader significance of the event: “For Rwanda, hosting this world championship is not only an event, it is a commitment to the future, it is a commitment to the next generation that are going to be part of this sport movement. We believe in sports as a driving force for unity, for commitment and for social economic development. So we are here celebrating our statement and commitment to the future.”

Beyond being merely a competition, the UCI Road World Championships 2025 represents a celebration of Rwanda’s extraordinary transformation. Emerging from the devastation of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, Rwanda has demonstrated resilience, unity, and foresight. Sports, particularly cycling, have evolved into both a symbol and a catalyst for healing, inclusion, and development.

As the races begin, Rwanda extends a warm welcome to the world to experience its history, engage with its culture, and partake in unforgettable moments of resilience, advancement, and elite sports.
