Ruben Neves scored a dramatic stoppage-time winner as Portugal snatched a 1-0 victory over the Republic of Ireland in their World Cup qualifier in Lisbon, after Cristiano Ronaldo missed a penalty.
The Portugal captain saw his spot-kick saved by Caoimhin Kelleher 15 minutes from time after Dara O’Shea was penalised for handling Francisco Trincão’s shot.
It looked as though Ireland would hold on for a valuable point, but Neves rose superbly to head in Trincão’s cross deep into injury time, sealing a heartbreaking defeat for the visitors.
The result compounds Ireland’s woes following last month’s surprise loss to Armenia in Yerevan.
In Saturday’s other Group F fixture, Hungary beat Armenia 2-0 to move second in the standings, five points behind leaders Portugal after three matches.
Ireland remain bottom, two points adrift of Armenia, ahead of a must-win clash in Dublin on Tuesday.
