Frenkie de Jong extends Barcelona contract until 2029

Barcelona have confirmed that midfielder Frenkie de Jong has signed a new contract keeping him at the club until 2029.

The 28-year-old Netherlands international joined Barça from Ajax in 2019 and is now in his seventh season with the Spanish champions, having won two La Liga titles and two Copa del Rey trophies.

“Barça are confident that the midfielder can be a pivotal part of the current sporting project due to his quality and experience,” the club said in a statement.

De Jong, who became a key figure under head coach Hansi Flick last season alongside Pedri, said he remains committed to the club he grew up dreaming of playing for.

“I always dreamed of playing for Barça, and now that I’m living that dream, I want to keep pursuing it for many more years,” he told reporters. “I’m eager to win more titles.”

Signed during the presidency of Josep Maria Bartomeu, De Jong is among the club’s top earners, though Spanish media report he has agreed to a salary reduction beginning in the 2026/27 season.

The Dutchman dismissed speculation about his wages, saying exaggerated reports had influenced how fans perceived him.

“I won’t say what I earn, but a lot of what’s been reported was exaggerated,” he said. “That’s affected how some people see me, because when they read that I’m one of the highest-paid players in Europe, it creates a false impression.”

Barcelona attempted to sell De Jong in 2022 amid financial pressures, but he chose to stay and has since made over 250 appearances for the club.

“I don’t feel undervalued by my teammates, coaches, or anyone at the club — that’s more a media thing,” he added. “That’s the beauty of football — everyone can have their opinion.”
