Chelsea’s Maresca handed one-match touchline ban for dissent and goal celebration

Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca has been handed a one-match touchline ban and fined £8,000 for misconduct following his behaviour during the club’s 2-1 Premier League win over Liverpool on 4 October.

The Italian will serve the suspension during Chelsea’s trip to Nottingham Forest on Saturday.

The Football Association confirmed that Maresca admitted to the charge, which stemmed from dissent toward match officials and his overzealous celebration of a late winning goal.

Maresca received his first yellow card after protesting a penalty decision and was shown a second in stoppage time when he sprinted down the touchline to celebrate Estevão Willian’s dramatic 96th-minute winner.

The victory ended Chelsea’s run of two straight league defeats and temporarily lifted them to sixth place, easing pressure on the manager.

Speaking to Italian media after the match, Maresca described his actions as spontaneous. “Running down the touchline to celebrate with the players was an instinctive reaction,” he said. “It was worth it, even if it meant being sent off.”
