Gibbs-White misses penalty as Nottingham Forest held to goalless draw at Sturm Graz

Nottingham Forest were held to a goalless draw away at Sturm Graz in the Europa League on Thursday, with Morgan Gibbs-White missing a crucial first-half penalty.

The hosts briefly thought they had taken the lead when Maurice Malone found the net just before the half-hour mark, but his effort was ruled out for offside.

Forest had a golden opportunity to go ahead in the 33rd minute after Emanuel Aiwu handled a cross in the area, but Gibbs-White’s spot-kick was saved by Sturm goalkeeper Oliver Christensen, who guessed correctly.

Chances were scarce after the break, and neither side could find a breakthrough as the match ended 0-0.

Elsewhere, Celtic endured a disappointing night in Denmark, falling 3-1 to Midtjylland. The hosts struck three times in an eight-minute first-half blitz to take control, while Reo Hatate’s late penalty provided only a consolation for the Scottish side.

Midtjylland remain perfect with four wins from four, while Celtic’s four points leave them outside the playoff spots.

In France, Freiburg came from behind to beat Nice 3-1. Kevin Carlos put the hosts ahead in the 25th minute, but Johan Manzambi quickly levelled before Vincenzo Grifo’s penalty and Derry Scherhant’s strike sealed victory for the German team.

Meanwhile, Marko Arnautovic proved decisive for Red Star Belgrade, converting a late penalty to secure a 1-0 win over Lille after Berke Ozer fouled Mirko Ivanic five minutes from time.
