Qatar Football Festival 2026 cancelled following travel disruption and airspace closure

Doha: The Local Organising Committee (LOC), in coordination with UEFA and CONMEBOL, has announced the cancellation of the Qatar Football Festival 2026 following ongoing travel disruptions and regional airspace closures that have affected international mobility.

The festival, which was scheduled to take place in Doha and feature a series of football-related activities and fan events, included the highly anticipated Finalissima Qatar 2026 match between Argentina national football team and Spain national football team at Lusail Stadium.

The match was expected to draw thousands of fans from around the world and serve as the centerpiece of the festival. However, organisers confirmed that the event will no longer take place in Qatar as originally planned due to ongoing logistical challenges affecting travel.

In a statement issued by the LOC, officials explained that the decision was taken jointly with international football authorities after assessing the continued impact of airspace disruption and travel restrictions on the ability of fans, players and officials to reach Doha.

“With airspace disruption and travel restrictions still affecting the ability of many fans, players and officials to travel, it has been jointly agreed that relocating the match at this time is the most appropriate course of action,” the statement said.

While the cancellation represents a disappointment for football supporters who had anticipated the landmark clash between the champions of Europe and South America, organisers emphasised that the decision was made to ensure the smooth staging of the match and the safety and convenience of participants and fans.

The LOC also reaffirmed Qatar’s continued commitment to hosting major international football events in the future, noting that the country remains ready to welcome global sporting competitions once conditions allow.

“The LOC welcomes the opportunity to host UEFA and CONMEBOL events in the future,” the statement added.

Officials also provided assurances regarding ticket purchases and travel arrangements. All fans who purchased tickets for the Qatar Football Festival will automatically receive full refunds within 30 days, which will be returned through the original payment method used during purchase.

Organisers advised fans that if refunds are not received within the specified period, they should contact the dedicated support service for assistance.

In addition, international supporters who secured travel packages through official tour operators will be contacted directly regarding their refund procedures and next steps.

The LOC encouraged fans to stay informed through official channels for further updates regarding the festival and related football events. Supporters can obtain the latest information through the Road to Qatar platform and its social media accounts.

Despite the cancellation, organisers expressed gratitude to football fans for their patience and understanding during the circumstances, thanking supporters for their continued enthusiasm and support for international football events in Qatar.
