Al Rayyan defeat Al Ahli, Al Arabi thump Al Sadd in QBF League semi-finals

Doha: The first round of the men’s basketball league semi-final playoffs for the 2025–2026 season got underway on Monday following the Qatar Basketball Federation’s announcement of the resumption of competitions after a temporary suspension due to prevailing regional circumstances.

Games were held behind closed doors at Al Gharafa Hall, where the four competing teams delivered high-intensity performances. Al Rayyan and Al Arabi, in particular, showcased strong technical quality and control in their respective fixtures, underlining their readiness for the decisive stage of the البطولة.

In the opening clash, Al Rayyan asserted dominance over Al Ahli, imposing an attacking rhythm from the outset. The quarters ended 25–20, 24–20, 24–11, and 20–18 in Rayyan’s favour. Al Ahli’s Nigel Armoni Johnson led his side with 26 points, while Rayyan’s Ryon Cortez Brown contributed 25 points, playing a pivotal role in orchestrating the offence. Aladji Bobo Magassa was named Best Qatari Player of the Game, earning a $100 award from Musafir for his standout display.

The second encounter between Al Arabi and Al Sadd proved a tightly contested tactical battle. Al Arabi started strongly, taking the first quarter 25–18 through quick transitions and effective wing play. Al Sadd responded in the second quarter, improving defensively and edging it 22–20 to reduce the deficit.

Both sides matched each other in the third quarter, which ended 20–20, as Bahraini player Mustafa Hussain made a notable impact in the paint. However, Al Arabi surged ahead in the final quarter, dominating 30–18 with disciplined defence and efficient fast breaks to secure a 95–78 victory. Mustafa Hussain led all scorers with 28 points, while Steven Bernard Lennard Green added 25 for Al Sadd. Abdulrahman Saad was named Best Qatari Player of the Game and received the $100 Musafir award for his influential performance.

The semi-finals are being played in a best-of-three format, with teams requiring two wins to advance to the final. The second round is scheduled for Thursday, March 26, with Al Sadd taking on Al Arabi at 6:00pm, followed by Al Ahli against Al Rayyan at 8:00pm.

Should the series be level at 1–1, a decisive third game will be held on Saturday, March 28, to determine the finalists. The season will conclude the same day with the third-place playoff at 6:00pm, followed by the final at 8:00pm to crown the league champions.
