Bayern Munich stage stunning late comeback to edge Freiburg in Bundesliga thriller

Bayern Munich produced a dramatic late comeback to defeat SC Freiburg 3-2 in a thrilling Bundesliga encounter, a match they could easily have lost.

Heading into the clash at the Europa-Park Stadion, Bayern Munich were firm favorites, sitting comfortably at the top of the Bundesliga table, while Freiburg, positioned in mid-table, were looking to strengthen their push for European qualification.

However, what unfolded was far from routine for the league leaders.

The first half saw Bayern dominate possession as expected, controlling the tempo and probing for openings. Despite their territorial advantage, clear-cut chances were limited, as Freiburg remained compact and disciplined defensively. The hosts showed early signs of danger on the counter, hinting at the threat they would pose later in the match.

The game truly came alive in the second half, and it was Freiburg who struck first.

Against the run of play, Freiburg capitalized on a defensive lapse to take the lead, with Johan Manzambi finding the back of the net to send the home crowd into celebration. Bayern, who had looked relatively comfortable, suddenly found themselves under pressure.

Things went from bad to worse for the visitors shortly after.

A costly mistake from goalkeeper Manuel Neuer allowed Lucas Höler to double Freiburg’s lead, putting the hosts 2-0 up and in a commanding position. At that moment, Bayern looked stunned, struggling to cope with Freiburg’s intensity and organization.

With just over ten minutes left, Freiburg were on the brink of a famous victory.

But Bayern Munich showed why they are champions.

The comeback began late in the game when Tom Bischof struck from distance to pull one back, injecting belief into the Bayern side. Moments later, he produced another superb effort to level the score at 2-2, completing a remarkable turnaround within minutes.

Freiburg, who had been in full control, suddenly found themselves under relentless pressure as Bayern pushed for a winner.

Deep into stoppage time, the decisive moment arrived.

A well-worked move involving Joshua Kimmich and Alphonso Davies opened up the Freiburg defense, allowing teenage forward Lennart Karl to tap home the winning goal and complete an astonishing comeback.

The late strike sealed a 3-2 victory for Bayern Munich, a result that looked highly unlikely just minutes earlier.

For Freiburg, it was a heartbreaking collapse. Having led 2-0 late into the game and produced one of their best performances of the season, they were unable to withstand Bayern’s late surge. Their defensive organization, which had been so effective for much of the match, ultimately crumbled under pressure.

For Bayern Munich, the result reinforces their title credentials and mentality. Despite an underwhelming performance for large parts of the match, their ability to turn the game around in dramatic fashion highlights their resilience and quality.

The victory keeps Bayern firmly at the top of the Bundesliga standings, maintaining their advantage in the title race.

However, the performance will raise questions, particularly regarding defensive lapses and moments of vulnerability that nearly cost them the game.

In the end, this was a match defined by two contrasting phases, Freiburg’s near-perfect execution for over 80 minutes, and Bayern Munich’s devastating efficiency in the closing stages.

A game Bayern could have lost… but instead turned into a statement of champions.
