West Ham United go into the break with a deserved lead over Wolverhampton Wanderers after a strong and assertive first-half performance to kick off the Premier League weekend.
This wasn’t just a lucky lead — West Ham have been the better side.
From early on, they played with more purpose, more aggression, and more intent in the final third. Even though Wolves had slightly more possession, West Ham created the clearer chances and looked far more dangerous whenever they pushed forward.
The pressure finally paid off just before the break.
In the 42nd minute, Konstantinos Mavropanos rose highest from a corner and powered in a header to give West Ham the lead — a goal that had been coming after sustained attacking pressure.
That moment changed everything.
Up until then, Wolves had tried to stay in the game, keeping things tight and looking for opportunities on the break. But they struggled to really test West Ham, managing very little in terms of clear attacking threat.
West Ham, on the other hand, looked sharper.
With players like Jarrod Bowen involved in attacking phases and midfielders like Tomáš Souček winning key duels, the home side controlled the important moments of the half.
Statistically, it reflects the balance — but not the danger.
Wolves may have edged possession, but West Ham had more shots on target and looked the side more likely to score again.
At half-time, it’s 1-0 — and fully deserved.
For West Ham, this is exactly what they needed in a relegation battle: energy, intent, and a goal to show for it.
For Wolves, second half? Big response needed — because right now, they’re second best.
