Carlo Ancelotti sparks major debate with Brazil’s ruthless World Cup squad decisions

Brazil have officially unveiled their final squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, and Carlo Ancelotti’s selection has already sent shockwaves through world football.

In what will be his first major tournament as Brazil manager, Ancelotti has made several bold and controversial decisions, leaving out notable names including João Pedro, Bento, Andrey Santos, and veteran defender Thiago Silva.

The omissions immediately became one of the biggest talking points following the squad announcement, especially with Thiago Silva missing out despite recently lifting silverware and continuing to perform at a high level deep into his career.

Yet while some experienced and emerging names were left behind, Brazil’s squad still carries the frightening depth, flair, and attacking power that has long defined the Seleção.

And at the center of it all stands Neymar Jr.

After years of injuries, setbacks, and uncertainty surrounding his international future, Neymar has been included in Brazil’s final squad and is now set for what could become the defining tournament of his international career. For many Brazilian supporters, this World Cup feels like one final opportunity for Neymar to cement his legacy by leading Brazil back to global glory.

In goal, Brazil possess one of the strongest goalkeeping departments in the tournament.

Alisson and Ederson once again headline the squad, giving Ancelotti two elite options capable of starting for virtually any national team in the world. Weverton completes the trio, bringing experience and composure behind two world-class starters.

Defensively, Brazil appear to have gone with a balance of leadership, physicality, and tactical discipline.

Marquinhos remains the leader of the backline, while Gabriel Magalhães and Gleison Bremer provide strength and aggression centrally. Alex Sandro and Danilo add tournament experience, while Douglas Santos, Léo Pereira, Wesley, and Ibanez give Brazil depth across multiple defensive positions.

One of the biggest surprises in defense is the omission of Thiago Silva. Despite his leadership qualities and continued consistency, Ancelotti has clearly chosen to prioritize younger legs and a more physically intense defensive structure heading into the World Cup.

In midfield, Brazil have selected a group built around balance and control.

Casemiro returns as the experienced anchor in midfield, bringing leadership and defensive stability. Bruno Guimarães is expected to play a major creative role, while Fabinho adds tactical intelligence and physicality in deeper areas.

Lucas Paquetá’s inclusion gives Brazil another technically gifted option capable of linking midfield and attack, while Danilo Santos offers additional versatility and energy.

However, it is Brazil’s attack that once again looks capable of terrifying opponents.

Vinícius Jr. enters the tournament as arguably the most dangerous Brazilian player in world football right now after several elite seasons at club level. Alongside him, Raphinha’s creativity and directness provide another major weapon in wide areas.

Gabriel Martinelli’s pace and intelligent movement add further unpredictability to the frontline, while Matheus Cunha and Igor Jesus give Brazil different attacking profiles depending on the tactical approach Ancelotti chooses to deploy.

Then there is Endrick.

The teenage sensation has officially been included in Brazil’s World Cup squad and is already being viewed by many as the future face of Brazilian football. Despite his age, Endrick’s confidence, explosiveness, and goalscoring instincts have convinced Ancelotti that he is ready for football’s biggest stage.

Another notable inclusion is Luis Henrique, whose rise over the last year has earned him a place in one of the most competitive squads in international football.

But despite the talent available, the conversation surrounding Brazil’s squad has quickly centered on Ancelotti’s ruthless decision-making.

The exclusion of João Pedro and Andrey Santos has particularly divided opinion among supporters, with many believing both players had done enough to earn a place in the final squad. Bento’s omission also raised eyebrows given his growing reputation as one of Brazil’s most reliable goalkeepers outside Europe.

Still, Ancelotti’s message appears clear.

This Brazil squad has not been selected for sentiment, reputation, or future development alone. It has been built with one objective: winning the World Cup.

For over two decades, Brazil have carried the weight of expectation without lifting football’s biggest trophy. Since their 2002 triumph, generations of talented Brazilian teams have fallen short despite entering tournaments as favorites.

Now, under one of the most successful managers in football history, Brazil believe they may finally have the structure, discipline, and tactical maturity needed to end that wait.

With Neymar chasing redemption, Vinícius Jr. entering his prime, and Endrick representing the future, Brazil head into the 2026 FIFA World Cup carrying not only pressure — but genuine belief that the trophy can finally return home.
