Fatima Al-Kuwari appointed CEO of Qatar’s bid for 2036 Olympic and Paralympic Games

By Staff Reporter

Doha: Qatar has appointed Fatima Sultan Al-Kuwari as Chief Executive Officer of its bid to host the 2036 Olympic and Paralympic Games, marking a significant step in the country’s ambition to bring the world’s biggest multi-sport event to the Middle East for the first time.

The appointment underscores Qatar’s commitment to preparing a comprehensive and competitive bid that builds on the nation’s proven track record of successfully hosting major international sporting events. It also reflects the country’s vision of leveraging sport as a platform for development, cultural exchange, dialogue and social progress.

Al-Kuwari brings more than two decades of executive leadership experience to the role. She currently holds a senior leadership position at Ooredoo, the international telecommunications company, where she has established a strong reputation in strategy, operations and organisational transformation across markets in the Middle East, North Africa and Southeast Asia.

Throughout her career, she has served in several key leadership roles within Ooredoo’s executive management structure, overseeing operations across nine international markets. She also played a pivotal role in the establishment of the Ooredoo Doha Marathon in 2013, one of Qatar’s leading community sporting events.

As CEO of the Olympic and Paralympic bid, Al-Kuwari will oversee the strategic, operational and organisational aspects of the campaign. Her responsibilities will include coordinating with local and international stakeholders, engaging with sporting organisations and supporting the development of a bid that showcases Qatar’s world-class sports infrastructure, organisational expertise and long-term national vision.

The appointment comes as Qatar intensifies preparations to present a compelling case for hosting the 2036 Games, building on a legacy that includes the successful staging of major international events such as the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, the Asian Games, World Championships across multiple sports and numerous regional competitions.

Qatar’s bid aims to deliver an Olympic and Paralympic Games that reflects the country’s capabilities while creating a lasting legacy for the region. The vision focuses on promoting inclusion, sustainability, youth development and international cooperation through sport.

By appointing Al-Kuwari to lead the bid, Qatar has placed an experienced executive at the helm of a project that seeks not only to host a historic edition of the Games but also to demonstrate the power of sport in bringing people together, fostering understanding among cultures and creating long-term social and economic benefits.

The move further reinforces Qatar’s determination to strengthen its position as a global sports hub and to present a bid that reflects both the country’s achievements and the aspirations of the wider region.
