In a result that has sent shockwaves through Group D, Australia’s young, unheralded Socceroos delivered a masterclass in disciplined, clinical football to defeat a star-studded Türkiye side 2-0 at BC Place in Vancouver. The victory marks Australia’s first World Cup opening-game win since 2006.
A Night of Young Heroes
Coach Tony Popovic made the bold decision to drop veteran captain Mat Ryan in favor of 22-year-old goalkeeper Patrick Beach, a gamble that paid off in spectacular fashion. Beach was instrumental in the result, producing eight vital saves to keep a clean sheet against a Turkish side that dominated possession (59%) and fired 30 shots toward the Australian goal.
The deadlock was broken in the 26th minute by 20-year-old winger Nestory Irankunda. After a perfectly weighted long ball from Paul Okon-Engstler split the Turkish defense, Irankunda raced clear, held his composure, and drilled a low finish into the near post. With the goal, Irankunda became Australia’s youngest-ever World Cup goalscorer, famously celebrating by mimicking the iconic boxing-the-corner-flag celebration of Australian legend Tim Cahill.
Resisting the Turkish onslaught
Türkiye, playing in their first World Cup since 2002, responded with relentless pressure. Arda Güler and Hakan Çalhanoğlu came agonizingly close, with Çalhanoğlu hitting the crossbar and Abdulkerim Bardakçı’s fierce strike being tipped onto the post by Beach in a pivotal sequence.
Australia’s defense, anchored by the exceptional Harry Souttar and Cameron Burgess, stood firm despite the onslaught. The Socceroos finally put the game to bed in the 74th minute when midfielder Connor Metcalfe picked up the ball 20 yards out and unleashed a skidding, low drive into the far corner, leaving goalkeeper Uğurcan Çakır helpless.
Looking ahead
The win leaves Australia level on three points with the United States at the top of Group D. The two nations are now set for a massive top-of-the-table clash in Seattle on June 19, which will likely determine the group winner. Türkiye will look to bounce back against Paraguay in Santa Clara as they fight to keep their tournament hopes alive.
