World Cup 2026: History in Seattle! USMNT clinches round of 32 Berth with dominant 2-0 Win over Australia

By Temi Kings

Seattle, Washington. For the first time in 96 years, the United States Men’s National Team has started a FIFA Men’s World Cup with back-to-back victories.

Before a deafening, patriotic crowd of 66,925 at a sun-drenched Seattle Stadium, Mauricio Pochettino’s side put on a tactical masterclass, easily dispatching Australia 2-0 on Friday. The victory preserves the USMNT’s perfect record in Group D and officially punches their ticket to the Round of 32 with a group stage match to spare—a feat the modern program has never achieved so rapidly.

Even more impressive? They did it entirely without talisman Christian Pulisic, who sat out while recovering from a calf injury. In his absence, a high-octane press and a historic defensive performance carried the Stars and Stripes to an unforgettable afternoon in the Pacific Northwest.

First Half: Balogun’s brilliance and Freeman’s historic moment

The Americans set the tempo from the opening whistle, suffocating Tony Popovic’s Socceroos with an aggressive counter-press. Australia, riding high from their opening 2-0 win over Türkiye, set up in a defensive 5-4-1 block but were broken down after just 11 minutes.

Fullback Antonee Robinson ignited the sequence with a crisp, low pass up the left flank to Folarin Balogun. The red-hot striker turned on the jets, leaving his marker trailing as he cut toward the six-yard box. Balogun whipped a vicious, low cross into the danger zone, forcing a desperate lunging clearance from Australian centre-back Cameron Burgess. To the horror of the travelling Socceroos fans, Burgess’s interception flew off his boot and directly into the roof of his own net past goalkeeper Patrick Beach.

With the 1-0 cushion, the USA dictated the pace. Midfielder Chris Richards anchored the possession, starting the match with an astonishing string of 100 consecutive completed passes dating back to matchday one.

Just before the stroke of halftime, the stadium erupted again. In the 43rd minute, Malik Tillman won a free kick deep on the right flank. Instead of a traditional cross, Robinson played a clever lateral pass to Sergiño Dest inside the penalty circle. Dest unleashed a powerful shot that took a heavy deflection, looping high into the six-yard box. Anticipating the drop perfectly, 16-year-old right-back Alex Freeman rose above Patrick Beach to bravely nod the ball home.

With that header, Freeman became the third-youngest goalscorer in USMNT World Cup history, joining Julian Green and Bert Patenaude.

Pochettino’s Take: “I think it was a fantastic game, a very good first half. I think we dominated the contest completely,” USA head coach Mauricio Pochettino said post-match. “We have to let the fans believe in us. This group is showing immense maturity.”

Second Half: A physical grudge match

Popovic rings the changes at halftime, introducing electric winger Nestory Irankunda, Jason Geria, and Connor Metcalfe to inject life into the Socceroos. The tactical shift paid off visually, as Australia clawed back 37% of the ball and generated real threats through their massive aerial presence.

Harry Souttar came close to halving the deficit in the 68th minute, rising highest on a corner kick to power a header that required a stellar fingertip save over the crossbar to preserve the American clean sheet. Moments later, Mitchell Duke found a pocket of space after a slick interchange with Jackson Irvine, but his final effort drifted agonisingly wide of the far post.

As the clock ticked down, the match turned incredibly physical. The tension boiled over in the 88th minute when Balogun and Souttar went chest-to-chest following a hard tackle, triggering a multi-player scuffle near the touchline. Referee warnings quickly turned to cards, with Balogun, Souttar, and Jacob Italiano all receiving yellows in the aftermath.

Pochettino closed out the match by handing World Cup debuts to Auston Trusty and Joe Scally, successfully salting away the final minutes of stoppage time to secure a historic clean sheet.

Historic notes from Seattle

  • Own Goal Royalty: The USA is the first team in FIFA World Cup history to benefit from an own goal in two consecutive tournament matches.

  • The 1930 Parallel: This marks the first time since the inaugural World Cup in 1930 that the USMNT has taken maximum points from their opening two group fixtures.

  • Richards’ Passing Masterclass: Center-back Chris Richards completed 91 of 95 passes against Australia, solidifying an incredible tournament passing accuracy rating over 96%.

What’s next in Group D?

With six points logged, the United States sits comfortably atop Group D and can secure the top seed with just a draw in its final match. They travel to Los Angeles on Thursday, June 25, to clash with a dangerous Türkiye side.

Australia remains heavily in the mix with three points. They will head into a do-or-die scenario against Paraguay on the final matchday, where a victory will guarantee them a spot alongside the Americans in the knockout rounds.
