Leclerc ends Ferrari’s Silverstone drought with dramatic British Grand Prix triumph

Silverstone, United Kingdom: Charles Leclerc produced a flawless drive to claim his first British Grand Prix victory on Sunday, leading Ferrari to a landmark triumph in a dramatic race at Silverstone that ended behind the safety car following late mechanical problems for championship leader Kimi Antonelli and a crash for Max Verstappen.

The 28-year-old Monegasque crossed the line just 0.427 seconds ahead of Mercedes’ George Russell to secure his ninth Formula One victory and Ferrari’s 250th Grand Prix win. It was also Ferrari’s first British Grand Prix success since 2022 and Leclerc’s first victory since the 2024 United States Grand Prix.

Leclerc appeared firmly in control after building a comfortable advantage over teammate Lewis Hamilton before a late safety car, triggered by Verstappen’s crash with five laps remaining, dramatically altered the closing stages. Ferrari elected to pit both drivers for fresh soft tyres, while Russell stayed on track and inherited second place.

The strategy ultimately proved costly for Hamilton, who dropped from second to third during the pit stops. Hopes of a final-lap battle were dashed when race control decided not to resume racing before the chequered flag, leaving fans disappointed as the race concluded behind the safety car.

Hamilton’s afternoon had already been compromised by a five-second penalty for a marginal false start.

“I just didn’t have it today. I jumped the start and I got a five-second penalty, but Charles had the pace on,” the seven-time world champion said after extending his remarkable record with a 16th podium finish at Silverstone.

Russell capitalised on both a well-timed safety car and a resilient recovery from an earlier puncture to secure his maiden British Grand Prix podium.

“My first podium here – I’m really pleased to be here,” Russell said. “I was unlucky with my puncture, but then very lucky with the Safety Car at the end. It’s a shame for the fans to miss the finish.”

Antonelli, who had claimed victory in Saturday’s sprint race, endured a frustrating afternoon despite starting from pole position. A slow getaway dropped him behind both Ferraris on the opening lap, and although he remained in contention for victory, mechanical issues late in the race forced two unscheduled pit stops for repairs. He eventually finished 16th.

Despite failing to score, Antonelli continues to lead the drivers’ championship with 179 points, holding a 25-point advantage over Russell. Hamilton remains third, another seven points behind, while Leclerc’s victory lifts him to fourth on 108 points and further strengthens Ferrari’s growing title challenge after Mercedes dominated the opening six races of the season.

“Tough times never last,” Leclerc declared over team radio after taking the chequered flag. “Only tough people last.”

Reigning world champion Lando Norris finished fourth for McLaren, followed by Red Bull’s Isack Hadjar in fifth. Racing Bulls teammates Liam Lawson and British rookie Arvid Lindblad, making his Silverstone debut, claimed sixth and seventh respectively.

Audi’s Gabriel Bortoleto finished eighth, while Alpine drivers Franco Colapinto and Pierre Gasly completed the top 10.

The race began in ideal conditions before a crowd of 175,000 spectators, contributing to a record four-day attendance of 564,000. It featured several thrilling battles, including Hamilton’s decisive overtake on Verstappen shortly before a Virtual Safety Car was deployed following Nico Hülkenberg’s retirement.

However, what had promised to be a dramatic finish turned into an anti-climax after Verstappen’s late accident at Stowe prompted the decisive safety car intervention. With racing never resuming, Leclerc cruised to a memorable victory while spectators were left wondering what might have been had the contest ended under green-flag conditions.
