An own goal by Victor Lindelöf, a clinical finish from Maxim De Cuyper, and a rapid-fire double from Jack Hinshelwood put the Seagulls completely out of reach before Villa midfielder João Gomes was sent off in the 40th minute to cap off a nightmare afternoon for Unai Emery's side.

Brighton & Hove Albion dismantled Aston Villa 4-0 at the American Express Stadium, scoring four times in an explosive 23-minute first-half spell to record a statement Premier League victory.

The onslaught began in the 8th minute when Maxim De Cuyper's strike rebounded off the post and struck Villa defender Victor Lindelöf for an unfortunate own goal. Ten minutes later, Georginio Rutter carved open the Villans' defense down the byline and cut the ball back for De Cuyper to smash home Brighton's second. The Seagulls doubled their lead again around the half-hour mark with two goals in just over 60 seconds: Jack Hinshelwood headed home a reset from Diego Gómez in the 30th minute before robbing João Gomes of possession inside the box a minute later to net his second.

Villa's day went from bad to worse in the 40th minute when João Gomes was sent off following a VAR review for kicking out at Rutter. Down 4-0 and reduced to 10 men, Unai Emery's side was forced into damage limitation for the rest of the match as Fabian Hürzeler's men comfortably controlled proceedings through the final whistle.
