The Women’s Draw: Sara Bejlek Stuns World No. 1

The biggest shock on the women's side came past midnight when 20-year-old Czech player Sara Bejlek recorded the milestone win of her young career by eliminating four-time Grand Slam champion Aryna Sabalenka.

How the Match Was Won:

First-Set Fightback: Sabalenka broke early and raced to a 5-1 lead in the opening tiebreak. Bejlek remained composed, saving set points and clawing back to take the opening set 7-6 (9-7) after 65 grueling minutes.

Second-Set Rally: Sabalenka established a 4-1 cushion in the second set, but Bejlek broke the world No. 1 three times in a row, stringing together five straight games to seal the 7-6, 6-4 victory with a love service game capped by an ace.

"I lost my words, it feels incredible. I was playing what I was feeling and not really thinking... I believed in myself no matter what."

US Open Implications for Sabalenka:

This early departure marks a second consecutive hard-court stumble for Sabalenka following her fourth-round exit at the Toronto Masters. With the defeat, Elena Rybakina now has a direct path to claim the WTA world No. 1 ranking if she reaches the Cincinnati final. Bejlek advances to face American Madison Keys in her first WTA 1000 quarterfinal.

The Men’s Draw: Tommy Paul Comeback Sinks Zverev

Over on the ATP side, American Tommy Paul delivered a masterclass in resilience against top seed and French Open champion Alexander Zverev.

The Key Turning Points:

Rain Break Reset: After Zverev took the first set 6-4, a 90-minute rain delay halted play during the second set. Paul emerged far sharper post-stoppage, saving a match point in the second-set tiebreak at 5-6 before snatching the set 7-6 (8-6).

Final Set Surge: Zverev took a 4-2 lead in the decider, but unraveled down the stretch. Plagued by 9 double faults and a critical foot fault call, Zverev allowed Paul to win four consecutive games to claim a thrilling 4-6, 7-6, 6-4 victory.

Paul advances to face Italian star Flavio Cobolli in the quarterfinals, while fellow top seeds Felix Auger-Aliassime and Alex de Minaur were also eliminated in a chaotic day for the men's bracket.
