FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee has officially handed down a series of severe suspensions and financial penalties following the chaotic altercations that erupted at the end of the 2026 World Cup final between Argentina and Spain. The sanctions target key players, coaching staff, and the Argentine federation itself after post-match confrontations marred the aftermath of Spain's extra-time victory in New Jersey.
The heaviest individual punishment was levied against Argentine midfielder Leandro Paredes, who has been suspended for 10 international matches and fined $90,000 for violent conduct after getting involved in physical clashes with several Spanish players. Teammate Nahuel Molina received a seven-match ban along with an identical $90,000 fine for his participation in the fracas. Spanish midfielder Gavi and Argentine attacker Thiago Almada were each handed one-match bans and $30,000 fines, while Argentina assistant coach Roberto Ayala received a three-match suspension and a $30,000 fine. FIFA confirmed that all player suspensions will apply strictly to international fixtures.
In addition to individual player bans, the Argentinian Football Association (AFA) faces major collective penalties totaling $321,000 in fines. The federation was cited for multiple breaches of FIFA’s disciplinary code, including team misconduct, discriminatory chants from supporters, and the display of a controversial political banner claiming sovereignty over the Falkland Islands following their semi-final match. The AFA has also been ordered to play its next home match under a 50 percent stadium capacity restriction, though a second match restriction remains suspended under probation. The AFA has announced its intention to appeal the rulings.
