The summer transfer window has erupted into open war between two of Spanish football’s biggest giants. Atlético Madrid CEO and majority shareholder Miguel Ángel Gil Marín has issued an explosive statement regarding the future of Argentine superstar Julián Álvarez, effectively shutting the door on any potential move to FC Barcelona.
Speaking to Movistar, Gil Marín expressed deep anger and disappointment over how the Catalan club has handled their public pursuit of the 26-year-old forward.
"We are even more angry, we are disgusted by the lies, the lack of transparency and professionalism of Barça. Julián Álvarez will NOT be transferred to Barça. I give my word."
While Atlético Madrid's primary objective remains keeping their star forward at the Metropolitano, Gil Marín acknowledged that the club would not hold Álvarez against his will if he insists on leaving. However, the CEO drew an absolute line in the sand regarding the destination.
"My dream is for Julián to stay at Atleti if he wants to. We'll look for an ALTERNATIVE if he wants to leave the club, but NEVER Barcelona. We are NOT going to negotiate with Barcelona. The decision is FIRM."
The tension surrounding Álvarez has visibly impacted the player's position inside the club, highlighted by the chorus of whistles he received from home fans when coming off the bench against Villarreal.
Gil Marín addressed the forward’s current situation, pointing the finger at external representatives and intermediaries who have destabilized the player.
"Julián is not doing well, he's really upset because there have been people who have taken it upon themselves to deceive and confuse him."
With Atlético Madrid taking a completely non-negotiable stance against Barcelona, any potential move for the Argentine forward will now depend on whether premier English or European suitors step up before the transfer deadline—or whether Álvarez settles back into Diego Simeone’s plans in Madrid.
