Newcastle United and Liverpool produced an instant Premier League classic at St James' Park, drawing 2-2 in a chaotic opener for new managers Matthias Jaissle and Andoni Iraola.
The Magpies hit the ground running under Jaissle, taking the lead in just the 5th minute when Anthony Elanga fired past Alisson. Liverpool restored parity in the 55th minute through Cody Gakpo after neat setup work by Ryan Gravenberch. However, Newcastle struck back almost immediately in the 57th minute as substitute Joe Willock converted a low strike to put the home side back in front.
With Newcastle looking destined to seal all three points, Iraola introduced substitute Víctor Muñoz. Deep into stoppage time in the 95th minute, Muñoz was tripped inside the box by Lewis Hall. Following a brief delay, Dominik Szoboszlai stepped up in the 98th minute and blasted his spot-kick into the top corner, securing a dramatic 2-2 draw with the final kick of the match.
