Al Meghaiseeb re-elected as Qatar Basketball Federation president

Doha: The General Assembly of the Qatar Basketball Federation (QBF) has re-elected Mohammed bin Saad Al Meghaiseeb as President for a new term that will last until 2028.

This decision was made during the electoral General Assembly meeting convened on Thursday evening at the Federation’s headquarters in Al-Gharafa. In this meeting, Mr. Saadoun Sabah Al Kuwari was appointed as Secretary-General, while Ahmed Youssef Mohammed Mubarak Al Darwish was designated as Assistant Secretary-General. Additionally, Abdullah Sultan Al Jaber, Mr. Abdulrahman Hamad Mohammed Al Manea, Mishaal Abdullah Youssef Al Malki, and Ahmed Youssef Mohammed Mubarak Al Darwish were elected to the Federation’s Board of Directors, with Ms. Zahra Majed Burhan Al Zaidan nominated as a female member of the Board.

The meeting was presided over by Al Meghaiseeb, the Federation’s President, and attended by Saadoun Sabah Al Kuwari, the Secretary-General, along with Ishaq Al Hashemi, a representative from the Qatar Olympic Committee’s Sports Affairs Department, who confirmed that the meeting met the legal quorum required by the nine clubs.

In his opening remarks, Al Meghaiseeb emphasized the Qatar Basketball Federation’s dedication to improving communication with Qatari clubs to foster the development of the sport and enhance the quality of local competitions. He reiterated that the ongoing initiatives are aimed at fulfilling the Federation’s objectives and enriching both local and international competitions.

The meeting addressed several significant topics, including the Federation’s forthcoming strategy and the national teams’ preparations for the 2027 World Cup, which will be hosted by Qatar, marking the first time this event takes place in the Middle East and North Africa region.

The discussion included a review of the accomplishments from the past three years and outlined plans for the new sports season of 2024-2025. These plans focus on increasing events and activities designed to nurture young talent, thereby enhancing Qatari representation in Gulf, Arab, and continental championships. Additionally, the minutes from the previous meeting were approved, and the budget was sanctioned. The future strategy of the Federation was also deliberated, along with preparations for upcoming events such as the 2030 Asian Games and initiatives aimed at developing women’s teams, all contributing to the realization of Qatar Vision 2030 in the realm of sports.

Al Meghaiseeb  expressed appreciation for the support extended by His Excellency Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani, President of the Qatar Olympic Committee, His Excellency  Jassim bin Rashid Al Buainain, Secretary-General of the Committee, and His Excellency Sheikh Saud bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, Honorary President of the Qatar Basketball Federation. He emphasized that this substantial support will play a crucial role in addressing the challenges ahead, particularly in the preparations for hosting the 2027 World Cup.

The QBF President stated, “The Federation is responsible for preparing the 5×5 and 3×3 national teams to be able to compete strongly in regional and international tournaments. The Federation is also developing a plan to prepare and get ready to host the 2027 World Cup, which is a major global event that the State of Qatar and the Federation are waiting for. We are also working to harness all indoor halls to serve the tournament, and we aim to exploit this event to stimulate sports tourism in Qatar and spread the game among young people.” He continued: The Federation is working hard to enhance the presence of Qatari cadres in administrative positions at the regional, continental and international levels.. noting that the Basketball Federation recently won the award for the third best continental federation in developing the 3×3 game, which is a great achievement that reflects the Federation’s commitment to developing Qatari basketball.

For his part, QBF Secretary-General Saadoun Sabah Al Kuwari said: “The Federation seeks to prepare a strong team to participate in the 2027 World Cup, and qualify for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

Al Kuwari emphasized that the Federation is committed to advancing the basketball framework by conducting training courses and workshops for coaches and administrators. This initiative also includes their participation in development programs designed to improve their skills and deepen their understanding of contemporary training and management techniques.

He underscored the Federation’s dedication to creating an optimal environment for nurturing young talent and fostering interest in the age groups that constitute a solid foundation for the future of basketball in Qatar.
